Information

Lightweight Structures in Civil Engineering Conferences are a series of annual international conferences, which have been organized by Polish leading Universities.

The aim of the Conferences is to bring together researchers and professionals from different countries and to provide the opportunity to present the results of their work.

XXIX Conference on Lightweight Structures in Civil Engineering organized by Polish Chapters of IASS, Gdansk 2023, Poland, November 30th - December 1st.

Conference main topics include

Engineering objects erected with a relatively small amount of used material like large span roofs, bridges, high buildings, towers, masts, free volume buildings, tanks or reservoirs. Thematic sessions are dedicated to spatial lattice structures, plate and shell structures, domes and membranes, thin-walled, tension, cable and pneumatic structures. Also, all methods of analysis as: analytical, numerical and experimental are welcomed.

The Conference Participants are welcome to deliver contribution to a selected thematic session. The following two sessions are planned:

  • Large spans light roofs, Organizer prof. dr hab. inż. Paweł Kłosowski

The session covers a vast array of topics related to architectural shaping, design, fabrication, diagnostics, and case study analysis of large-span roof structures. The presentations enfold structures made of any materials, e.g. fabrics, FTFE foil, steel, aluminum, timber, glass, and composite materials. No limitations are imposed on the form of the roof structure - there may be hanging roofs, domes, trusses, frames, modular structures, including tensegrity systems.

The session is bound to cover operational and diagnostic problems, e.g. configuration variations of tensile forces in hanging roof structures. The session domain also refers to laboratory testing of structural materials and their durability assessment. The session will concern a vital issue of the interaction of these impressive structures with the environment and surroundings, their contribution to the landscape. We welcome the architects, designers, and diagnosticians working in the considered fields to deliver their contributions to the LSCE Conference.

  • Safety and Reliability of Lightweight Structures, Organizers: dr inż. Karol Winkelmann, dr hab. inż. Urszula Radoń, dr hab. inż. Leszek Małyszko

The “Safety and Reliability of Lightweight Structures” thematic session is devoted to the sensitivity and reliability assessment of a wide range of lightweight structures, such as towers, masts, tanks, silos, structural frames and grates, masonry objects, tensegrity structures, among many others.

The thematic session concerns the latest theoretical, numerical, and experimental developments in the assessment of the safety of structures and structural systems. It focuses on a variety of analytical approaches to the subject, e.g. simulation methods, perturbation methods, closed-form reliability assessment, metamodels, artificial neural networks, machine learning, numerical optimization, risk assessment techniques, fuzzy logic, safety surveying, and monitoring.

The session focuses on the challenges due to live, environmental, and accidental loads action effects, and the occurrence of structural imperfections of material, geometry, and boundary conditions and their impact on both the structural response irregularities and deviations, and the failure modes.

The session tackles the tasks of accurate mathematical modelling of uncertainties, an appropriate description of the random parameters, and the determination of in-situ variabilities. Deterministic, probabilistic, and stochastic research tasks are all investigated.

The main objective of the “Safety and Reliability of Lightweight Structures” thematic session is to contribute to both science and real-life engineering practice to facilitate a robust, durable, and reliable structural design and optimization, to improve engineering awareness of probabilistic calculations and their representation in design codes.

In the 1st Century, Pliny the Elder stated that “the only thing that is certain is that nothing is certain”. The session welcomes all scientists and designers who dedicate their interest and everyday labor to the quantification of the uncertain and pursue the knowledge of its effect on structural safety and reliability. As per the latter, it is bound to be made certain and undeniable, under any circumstance.
